Fear overwhelms everyone. We are afraid to change anything (stand up for our beliefs, become more individualistic, etc.) when we are comfortable enough in society to be content. When you know you will be fed, have a place to come home to and the like just by staying in line, how many people would want to change? How many of them would want to not speak against unusual behavior when by silence one could be implemented with those rebelling? It reminds me of 1984 by Orwell. Same thing... "the only hope lies with the proles", but they got just enough leeway to be content with their lives too. People will only change if that change is more important to them than living.
